My opinion :)

Textpad, shareware (free) and it has thousands of syntax highlighter plugins... and is the best Windows text editor. It can open anything and is lightweight and fast. It has certain Java functions built in like the ability to compile within the editor.

Good luck, Steve

Thanks for your thoughts. I program in Windows. Do you have a Windows recommendation in terms of the best editor to use?

I read your comment to not use an IDE for the first app you write, but I don't know much about how to run and debug apps using the DOS shell. Any thoughts on what is the most helpful path to follow?

Scott,

I totally agree with the point of not using an IDE when starting with Java (or other languages for that matter). In fact, I use emacs (substitute with your favorite editor) and the bash shell. I have not yet felt the need for any IDE...

You can find some good starting points here on how to get started with Java from the command line:

http://java.sun.com/learning/new2java/index.html

and here

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/index.html

Best luck!

Thanks from tired Scott...

Where did you end up installing the driver?

It's in C:\Program

Files\JBuilder6\jdk1.3.1\jre\lib\ext\mysql-connector-java-3.1.1-alpha\mysql-connector-java-3.1.1-alpha-bin.jar

Is it ok to be where it is, meaning in a

subdirectory

of ext or should I push the jar file up one level

and

place it right in the ext folder?

If it's in a jre/lib/ext somewhere, _that_'s the version of JVM you're using.

It is in jre\lib\ext\, but as you can see by the

path,

it is in the jdk1.3.1. If I look at Start->Settings->Add/Remove Programs, I only see

the

1.4.0_01 and 1.4.0_02 versions installed there.

So, I

am confused with which one is actually on my

machine.

Is there some other way to test which version is running?

It looks like you're running the one that comes with JBuilder, which is version 1.3.1 (as you can see by the name jdk1.3.1). That's why it doesn't show up in Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.

The easiest way to tell what verison of Java you're running is with 'java -v'.

Again, please don't remove the CC to the list, because others won't be able to help you with answers (or learn from the discusssion), use your 'reply-all' button instead of just 'reply'.
