2. Making a file appear in multiple places ("branch") is easy in sourcesafe, but it's much harder to keep related-but-not-the-

-same-file branches in SourceSafe.

If you happen to know more about "branching" in SourceSafe, could you talk about who it actually works in SourceSafe and how that differs from Perforce? My (admittedly limited) understanding of SourceSafe is that it doesn't do _real_ branching, but some kind of workaround with directories and something called "pinning." I've taken a look at the docs/papers at the VSS website, but I don't find that they really give me the technical info I need to understand just what a "branch" really is in source safe and how it differs from a branch in RCS/CVS, or Perforce, or ClearCase. It looks to me like it just uses a "vault" model, creating a new directory (like symbolic link). This might sound like p4's inter-file branching at first, but I think its actually quite different in terms of what it does/doesn't do (and how).

3. The GUI interface is nice enough, but the command interface (which is what you'll use for scripting and for data mining) is terrible.

Visual crap is still crap, eh ;-) Really, the only good thing I hear about VSS is the GUI. Its a nice integrated interface to MS visual tools, but its just a pretty face with not much in the way of full-fledged or reliable SCM functionality underneath (at least that is what I hear over and over and over again).

Cheers!
