maildropfilter(5) says:

PATTERNS The pattern syntax in maildrop is similar to the grep com- mand's syntax, with some minor differences.

because i wouldn't denote the absence of the ability to match the preceding item a given number of times a "minor difference", i thought that maildrop understands this syntax.

but because the man page also states:

With the exception of the following characters, an exact match is looked for. [...]

you're right, the man page is correct.

egrep is not maildrop.
