the interesting thing about it, is the number of columns the resultset
has:
1> 10, both tables
2> 10, both tables, too ?!?! shouldn't there be only 5 ?
3> 5, just the 1st table
_i_ thought, the number of columns in query <2> should be 5, like in <3>

Sorry, I just now saw that you were talking about number of columns.
I have tried to repeat the above with some tables in my databases,
but with no success.
How big are your tables ?? Can you upload them to :
ftp://support.mysql.com:/pub/mysql/secret
and let us know a file name.
