Currently the photo attribute just comes from FOAF files. It should really come from more sources in the future, like hCards.
As for clear-for-use site icons, I agree... it'd be nice to have those as well. For now people tend to just blindly reference the site's root /favicon.ico, but that's kinda a hack.
Going out and approaching the dozen or so largest sites and getting their permission to include them (perhaps at various sizes) would be good.

Some nodes contain a 'photo' attribute, but I don't know if that's standard. No sgnodemapper site files implement a 'photo' or 'image' handler. Many sites will want to use images as inter-site links. There will obviously be differences about whether those should be the remote site's profile photo (if available) or a generic thumbnail for the foreign site itself (and then there's copyright issues).
So I have two separate requests: Can we request that each network providing a sgnodemapper site file also include icons that are cleared for use for links to the site? I'd suggest many square sizes from 20x20 to 36x36. If this were being organized by someone it would be cool to make them uniform buttons or something along the lines of
http://javedkhalil.com/techBlog/top-50-social-bookmarks-wordpress-50-social-bookmarks-plugin/ but I think that's asking for a bit much. Without something like this, though, each cooperating site will end up building their own collection of icons for the networks they have "approved"...
Caching guidance: I now allow my users to indicate their profiles on other networks, so I'm already recording "also me" information verified by social graph api calls. Is it reasonable to cache the 'photo' attribute of such a node at verification time, for display as that cross-site link? (I may not do it even if it's kosher as I like uniform aspect ratio links...)
