I have wondered similar. I have not tried this but this is what I thought to do. Since the chart is just an image then, if you have it embedded in your own web page, you should be able to use the map and area tags to break it down and put onclick or other such behaviors on it.

I had initially though to have a chart where clicking or a portion would effectively drill down to a sub chart of that portion of the data.
