is it maybe possible that you have some pecl-* ports or other ports installed that need php5 as dependency?

maybe you should also try to run "portupgrade -fr php5 -x php5\*"

i had 4 pecl ports that needed updated and one of them (fileinfo 1.03) is broken in the ports tree right now. to fix it, just grab fileinfo.c from the fileinfo CVS repository and overwrite the one in the work/Fileinfo directory and then do a make install as usual. that fixed it for me.
