Have you tested the basic network connectivity between your PC and the Sun server?
I have checked this with tracert on the PC. I've run multiple passes and come up with an overall time of 10ms. per round trip.
Is the Sun located in the same place on the network as the NT server?
They are located on the same physical net, but on different floors in the building, connected by one or more bridges and a router.
Do both connect through the same hub?
As far as I know, we only have one router inside the firewall, so, yes, they do. Again, there are intervening bridges.
Is this a recent model Sun system, or some ancient SPARCstation 1 or (shudder) SLC that was dragged out of a closet somewhere?
The Unix server is a SPARCserver 20, with 128mb of memory, 600mb of swap, and running SunOS5.5. The discs are part of a RAID array implemented via Sun's Disk Suite package.
If you've quite a large depot, it might just be the GUI building the display lists for the tree viewer. These things are usually horribly slow...
I hope a depot with 500 files (and ~500 changelists ) doesn't fall in the "big" range, but nonetheless, why so much slower against one server than another? It builds the same lists either way...
I doubt it is a performance problem with the server, since it seems to function well for other users. You didn't mention what client platform the developer in the UK was using, this might help a bit.
They run NT. I believe they downloaded with "p4 sync" not the GUI. And all command line interactions seem to go at about the same speed against either server. Although it did run a bit slower against the solaris box at least in the complete sync test we tried. So if its not the server its the network? Does anyone have any concrete steps to take to check out why the GUI would have so much slower network access to the UNIX box or any ideas about what we can do to fix it? I suppose I should get the network admin guy involved here.
