<sigh> I guess I'll just have to fix this myself. I can fix this in autoconf, but then what's going to happen is that autoconf itself will have a different fix, say, next year, and everything will suddenly break again...

Hmm... I suppose it could be that my system's hosed in some subtle way. I've been meaning to tear it down and do a full reinstall for a while now. I'll try to get that done over the weekend, and I'll let you know if that solves the problem.
