I got the scoop from Perforce on this a couple of weeks ago. A new instance of p4d is spawned to handle each p4 command, but most of them come and go quickly. They couldn't explain why some of them seem to hang there for long periods (way past the duration of the query).

As far as the server error message... I witnessed that being created when i would control-c during certain p4 commands (don't remember if it happened all the time...)

Some questions on p4d...

Our server seems to have 1 to 3 instances of p4d running at any one time. I assume this is normal.

Does anyone know what causes new p4ds to be forked ? Is this a tunable thing ? Are more or less better ?

Also, we seem to get an constant flow of the following error message to the error log:

Perforce server error: Date 1998/08/24 09:33:41: Connection with partner closed unexpectedly. TCP receive failed. read: socket: Connection reset by peer

How many ? 200+ per day.
