Good feedback, especially about the shadows, and for noticing I had twice as many faces as I meant to (the extra coplanar faces; it looks better if you delete the extras).

The reasons I don't like 2d face-camera include: 1. If you've got a bunch of them, they all look identical. With my rotated faces, paralax makes them all look a little different unless the camera is really far away. 2. Looking down at 2d trees from above a certain angle, they look flat. 'course, mine look like green starfish from really high angles, but I think they look better at, say 60 degrees than 2d trees do.

On the other hand, the 3d version is a lot "denser" looking than it should be, especially towards the trunk. It has triple or quadruple the branches and leaves.
