Hi guys n gals,
I would like to backup my data to a tape drive.. but I can't really afford to lock everyone out of the system when I do this.. is it necessary for me to obtain a READ LOCK to backup the data?
Note that I would not be using MySQL to do the backup but actually copying the actual files to the backup device..
What are the issues with this?
Regards,
Matthew Clark.

for the variable key_buffer_size, the documentation reads: Index blocks are buffered and are shared by all threads. key_buffer_size is the size of the buffer used for index blocks. Increase this get better index handling (for all reads and multiple writes) to as much as you can afford. If you make this too big the system will starte to page and go REAL slow
how big is too big? I have 250M worth of ISD files, so I want to make it 250M, is this ok on a linux 2.2 machine with 1Gig of ram?
thanks, - Mark
