Sorry. I forgot to mention that the server has courier (POP/SMTP/IMAP) installed (so sendmail was replaced and mail (mailx) does not work).

Is it still possible?

Yes. Just use sendmail (the version that comes with courier). It's not a full version of sendmail but it will allow you to send messages from the console. See the examply Roland sent earlier.
