A friend of mine told me that it's possible to run courier-imap in tandem with qmail-ldap, without needing courier's schema.

As it has been pointed out, that's true. You'd install qmail-ldap, and compile courier-authlib and courier-imap, all according to their own documentation. After they're all built and installed, you just need to modify some of the config files for courier-authlib to use the field names used by qmail-ldap's schema.

My question would be: why bother? Courier provides a much better SMTP server than qmail does, and you won't have to hack up the authlib configuration to make it work. Do you see some benefit to qmail-ldap that courier doesn't provide?
