did you rebuild and reinstall your courier-imap?

Sure did. I know about static vs. dynamic linking (but it doesn't hurt to check anyway).

My rather unscientific and unhelpful guess is that there is some bad juju going on in the 'authdaemon' code with respect to 'vpopmail', which doesn't surprise me given that the 'vpopmail' support appears to be deprecated from the perspective of the Courier maintainers (I think this is a pity for reasons I've already mentioned).

Time to break out the debugger, methinks. Does anyone know a reliable way of making the 'vpopmail' style authentication fail?

I take on board later comments about using 'vchkpw' (even if I'm not sure exactly what this means) only, but I don't think that's the right answer - authdaemon provides a pretty flexible scheme for multiple authentication types and I'm sure there are people that need to run more than one.
