FYI, there is a "local history" feature coming in NetBeans 6.0. It is available in the current Milestone 9 build. It might help out in situations like this. A bit more info. is available here: http://wiki.netbeans.org/wiki/view/NewAndNoteWorthy

Come on now, haven't you ever lost a file before? Of course I'm kicking myself. I normally use svn, I've just had some issues getting the plugin to work with Netbeans and let it slide.... Thanks for everyone for their help!

Hi, this is a follow up to my last post in which I was extremely depressed.
I found a tool called "jad" which have saved the day. I have to futz with the decompiled code a bit to get it in working order, but basically it is amazing and I am really really happy that all was not lost...
However, is there a better more Netbeans-y way to do this? How can I prevent it happening in the first place?
Why oh why did Netbeans turn my file to gibbly-gook?
Actually, you had it right in your initial post:
I was editing a file for a project when my computer (windows xp) crashed.
Besides getting an OS that doesn't crash and scramble your files :-), I would suggest studying up on source code control systems (or at least figuring out how to copy files to a USB memory stick). Working for weeks with no backups is just asking for trouble.

Also, this is my first, er second post to this list. Is there a place to view/search emails online?
Thanks, Angus

Hi I have a huge problem.
I was editing a file for a project when my computer (windows xp) crashed.
When I rebooted and restarted Netbeans 5.5, my project loaded back up...
Except that the file that I was working on has turned into thousands of characters of gibbly-gook.
I still have the class files for this file and I still have the netbeans project jar from the dist directory (which runs when I double click it).
But my source code is lost!
Does anyone know how I can retrieve this? Or recreate the source from the class files.
Why would Netbeans destroy my file :(
I have been working on this file for weeks and it's about 2000 lines long. Yes it's a big file, but I usually tend to clean up and refactor the code once I get to stable points.
Anyhow I have lost *tons* of work.
If anyone has any idea how I can get my source code back I would be eternally grateful.
I am really lost. I have a deadline next Wednesday and I don't think I can recreate all the code in one week.
I can send along the class files / destroyed .java file if anyone thinks that would help
Thanks, Angus
