Ahh, so taking out 'products' from the URL seems to do it. That should be an acceptable workaround for me I think assuming that whomever customers I am searching on are not inputting anything besides products to the database.
I have a shopping/wishlist application. I want to have a dropdown of stores and have the customer be able to select from multiple stores when shopping rather than selecting on all of them. An advanced search feature for users that need to do something like that.
For example, I want to search for an iPod and I only want to limit my results to Apple, MacMall, Circuit City, and Best Buy because I only trust those stores.
Here's my app if any of you have Facebook and want to check it out.

it seems to work without the orderby query parameter set to auto; at least modification_time and relevancy seem to behave with the escaped parens as-is.
auto returns results without the products itemtype.
