In any case, I will be investigating the pconnect() problem today and may even have a patch available within a few hours. Of course, it would be nice if I did not have to try to extract the problem out of PHP context, and just had a simple C program that demonstrates the problem, but I will go with what I have.

I thought PHP v4 had its own client for MySQL in its source. I found this in the NEWS file:

NEWS: to --with-mysql, the bundled MySQL client library will be used (Sascha)
