Our Headquarters in Norway is forcing us to migrate to a Exchange server.
So they have an IT policy plus a security policy in which they have described their ideal setup for your environment. Of course, they have conducted extensive research to find the best product to protect your company data and your confidential client information. Ask them to let you have a look at it.
They say that will be better for the user because of the single logon an others things the exchange server does and the Linux+IMAP dos not.
That is very true. For example, the Linux/Courier combo won't force you to employ an idiot with a worthless dipl^W^W^W^W^WMCSE to reboot your crashed Win2k box once a week. I had OpenBSD/Courier up and running for over a year without any need to change anything or even reboot (software upgrades, yes) on a P2 233 with 32MB RAM. In the 3 months that we've had Win2k/Exchange on some of the allegedly best and certainly most expensive PC hardware I've ever seen, we've had external software support coming in at least once a week.
Also, the additional productivity advertised on the shiny MS boxes has not yet appeared. People do not understand team folders and the like. What they do understand, though, is that IMAP was good and POP3 sucks dick. *Un*fortunately, MS Exchange does not offer IMAP, no matter what the glossy catalogues say.
I am not familiar with the exchange server, any one knows what kind of things that are not possible todo with the IMAP?
Some things are definitly harder to do with Courier IMAP[1]. Gaping security holes, totally non-deterministic behaviour, fucked up error messages, and the total absence of useable IMAP functionality for starters.
The Active Directory of windows is based in LDAP, any one knows a way to authorize imap users against it?
Your IT people are obviously incompetent to the degree of dangerousness if they let you run this crap. Is your management aware of the security implications of running this setup?
On second thought, though...
Help me to free the world from the hands of Microsoft....
... you're obviously not concerned about security since you're using Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2479.0006. Tell you what - why don't you read *and understand* http://www.datasync.com/~rogerspl/Advocacy-HOWTO.html before embarking on a war that you will not only lose but which will also make you look very stupid.
Footnotes: [1] Well, a Easy Linux default install might do the trick...
