I tried using another mail client, several infact, to take advantage of IMAP. None of them were close to Google Mail's threading view.

I think gmail is quite superior to anything else. I forward all my email address's to my gmail account then get them to have a label so I know what address they came to. It also has a good spell check feature, not to mention the threading. I am always on the move too, never really on one machine so the web interface is fantastic :D
