I have courier running as a backend for webmail app for more than 400,000 users without a problem. You will find imap is not the biggest problem, I found the slowest thing was the webmail application itself.

I know, I can even see it on our office server that handles no more than 10 mail boxes. But I don't plan to run the webmail application and the imap server on the same machine. In fact, I'm not even sure yet if I'll have imap and smtp running on the same machine. If I can, I'd like to use dedicated machines for as much as I can, but that will depend on what the budget for hardware ends up looking like.

Thanks for your thorough reply. If you have any links to documentation dealing with large scale implementations of courier, please post them here. Those are not too easy to find... (anything in English, German or Dutch is good :-)
