Courier is a complete system (MTA too) as well as a separate courier-imap product, FYI.

Actually, even the full version of courier is happy working with virtual users. It will work with any combination of real and virtual users using a variety of authentication methods (you choose only the ones you wish). My system has only one real user, plus a number of virtual users and mailing lists.
