Well, obvioulsy GT is not death, they have _very big_ plans for real time communications on Google. They have hired the main GAIM developer for implementing the Talk protocol on GAIM and also publishing the protocol, but...
...I can understand you beeing pissed off, and even although Google is quite secretive about plans and release dates it seems that open S2S is more in the range of months away rather than weeks.
For me at this very moment the most big problem about GT is the lack of S2S communication. I use mainly XMPP for IM traffic but still need to mantain an MSN account around for talking with many friends here in Spain where MSN is predominant. I cannot tell them to use GT because I (as many companies) have my own Jabber and so I will have to use a GT account, which for me is the same as an MSN account in that regard.
The moment GT opens S2S I (and many many non-GT jabber users) would be able to push our contacts to use GT as they will have a usable and dumb-proof client with a great voice support that will be able to talk to us with an open, secure and distributed protocol.
I've been using jabber almost from the first betas of jabberd (and that was in the previous century :-D ) and been so close to having our dreams come true as almost touching it but without even a date or timeframe for this moment to come is quite depressing.
Please Google, hurry up!!
P.S.: I should admit that Google have been much more open on plans about GT than any other of their projects. But then again if any GT developer is reading these forums: "Stop reading and finish S2S!!" ;-)
