One technical aspect is that the infrastructure for this repository is based on https: rather than http:. In addition to making transactions slower than they would otherwise be, Maven seems to have problems accessing https repositories through a proxy (such as from behind the Sun firewall). Synchronizing to ibiblio would deal with this, as well as reduce configuration setup of having to specify the java.net repository.

We are talking with Maven folks to set up a synchronization to ibiblio.

On a related note (which is the real subject of this e-mail), I think we really want to have an externally-visible machine that we can control.

We have an external machine that hosts hudson - http://glassfishbuildtools.sun.com:8000.

If we have such a machine, we can use that for...

1. hosting maven repository (by aliasing maven.java.net to that machine) with HTTP traffic, with rsync that let ibiblio sync up easily. 2. hosting CVS news (cvs-news.glassfish.org or something) 3. hosting Hudson (hudson.glassfish.org or something)

I forgot when but I thought at point people have been talking about exactly such a machine (I remember seeing e-mail between sharing that with planetjdk.org.)

I wonder if we can get such a system...
