So if it does not work on your System, then your Linux-Installation is probably misconfigured.

RIGHT. That's what the post was about. And setting the hostname as I described has corrected this "Linux" configuration problem (not a "courier" problem). The whole point is that this is NOT a courier problem, but if people running courier experience this, they should make sure that their hostname is set properly.

That is one reason I did not install Courier MTA, only the IMAP part from Debian packages. I am more familiar with Postfix and there are books to help me with Postfix (Are there books for Courier?) and so aside from having to edit /etc/courier/maildroprc I did not need to configure Courier, only Postfix.

If there are Courier books I would like to get my hands on one, since I could use some help with Maildrop.
