Stewart:
I did show tables before the drop command. It did show those tables.
Thanks,
Frank

With 5.0.19
When I tried to drop a database, I got an error msg :
mysql> drop database sipinst;
ERROR 1051 (42S02): Unknown table
'error_tbl,dsplanbundle,dsgroupfunction,dsmimetype,dsbundle,dsuserservice,dsplan,dsuser,dsusergroup,d'
Right after that, query into those tables prove they are existing.
Then I retried "drop data sipinst " , the database got dropped.
Have you run 'show tables' on this node before?
exactly what are the steps to reproduce?
