I have been working on a similar project and it is not an extremely time intensive process. I am assuming you have your current routes as ESRI shapefiles correct? If so download this tool (http:// arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=14273) to convert *.shp file to *.kml. You can then open up the kml in a text editor and manually extract all your coordinate data (it really only takes about 30secs a route for me to do this). Cut and paste your extracted coordinated data into another text file and save it as a CSV (comma delimited text). The KML separates all the lat and lng info with commas so it is already perfect for CSV. Open your CSV data in your spreadsheet software and arrange your columns as needed. Hope that helps.

Joe,

So far as I am aware we do not currently submit a shapes.txt file as it is optional. However, right now some bus routes are traveling through areas that are not accessible (e.g. people's backyards) so OCTA wanted to find out what is needed to remedy this problem and a shapes.txt file was suggested.

I read in the documentation that Google accepts certain types of GIS files, but it was not clear to me which types are accepted. Our software (HASTUS) will export shape files associated with a route in a .shp format, would that work?

Would we need to do this for every route, or just the ones that are currently erroneous?

Thanks,

Daniel

P.S. If anybody knows why my interface switches to German every time I post to this group I would appreciate help fixing it. Nein sprechen deutsch. On 25 Jun., 12:19, "Joe Hughes" <jhug@google.com> wrote:

Hi Daniel,

How does your agency currently associate shapes with individual routes and patterns?

I work for Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in Orange County, California. We currently provide data to Google Transit, but some of the routes shown do not coincide with real geography in the area. I have been asked to provide updated shape files, but apparently the shape files are to be in a delimited text file as opposed to actual shape files.

Where would I find more information about all possible ways to transmit shape data to avoid reinventing wheels?
