Indeed.

Simple solution: set $HOME to /var/mail/<domain>/<user>/

Using LDAP for virtual users, we configure the user's Maildir/ as $HOME (we configure a $VHOME as the direct antecedent, which would correspond to your /var/mail/<domain>/<user>/) and Maildir/'s where maildrop puts *all* the metadata, including maildirsize. An example of extra metadata put into in $HOME is the user's mailbot auto-answer autorespond stuff.

Using LDAP with standard schemas such as Courier's authldap.schema and qmail.schema is much easier that way.

But I wouldn't expect Turbo to know anything about LDAP (who said "sarcy"?)
