system account called alias. I do not have a .courier or .courier-default file in /etc/courier/aliasdir with delivery instructions for unknown accounts. Still, mail to ali@hostname.fmp.com is being accepted by courier, and I have no idea what it's doing with it.

Can anyone give me a clue?

First, do an EXPN on this address. This'll tell you if some alias's getting picked up.

Barring that, look at the logs. The logs will tell you where the mail goes.

It's probably stuck in the queue because of a deferral, for some reason.
