With due respect, if doing it the right way is too difficult, the answer is to ask for help rather than giving up. There are plenty of us who are experienced with doing this, and would be glad to assist.

In the CVS era I agree that vendor imports could be very difficult. But with svn it's much, much easier.

Easier said than done. Feel free to give libedit a try.
