Other pieces that may or may not be significant; I use ThunderBird Portable as well as Outlook 2003 It's a problem only with the 5.5.0709.30344-en-pb version of Google Desktop. I installed an older version (5.1.0707.23222-en-pb) and the problem does not occur.

That does it for me to! I can now use google desktop! I can live without my email being searchable, more than living without google :)
