Hello,
We've got a qmail/courier (pop AND imap)/clamav/spamassassin setup
that's been in-place for over a year, and has been having problems with
a delay (varies in duration. sometimes 30 seconds or more, sometimes a
couple minutes) when trying to read imap folders, or move messages
around (best example is moving a message to the sent messages folder
after it's gone through smtp). I telnetted into the imap port, and the
delay's holding up the greeting from the server (if I oleh localhost).
Show it, please.
I've searched archives and seen that most commonly this is a problem
with a dns lookup or an ident lookup timing out, and checked the configs
to see what our TCPDOPTS are, and the dns and ident lookups are both off
(I know this isn't the best practice, but it was configured like this
when I got here (monday heh). Once I've got this solved, I'll put at
least the dnslookups back on, but that's later).
Typical of SMTP delays, not necessarily IMAP hesitation.
So, if the delay isn't coming from a dns lookup or an ident lookup, and
there're no errors or warnings in the mail log, can anyone recommend
what else I should be investigating to find out where the delay's
actually coming from?
What's the server platform?
What clients? Do they all exhibit similar behavior?
Observations with top, or other system tools?
