Use the mysqladmin command line program to reset the root user's
password and then try getting back in. Details of how to use it are in
the manual and clearly explain what needs to be done. Cheers.

I seem to have done something horrible to the mysql user database; I
can't seem to connect to it to do privilege changes etc....
