On the right hand side you can only put a local mailbox name, not an email address.

The idea is that john gets all of example.com's mail, and sets up his $HOME/.courier* files to create mailboxes in that domain.

This works exactly like qmail.

I am using 'userdb' virtual users (same uid/gid). The main problem is the @example.com aliases (no specific e-mail address).

Can I alias "@example.com: virtual" (where 'virtual' is the local UID owning all the userdb users), then setup a .mailfilter in virtual's $HOME to distibute the mail into Maildirs? I suppose this would mean effectively duplicating all userdb entries & reworking a quota system.

Have you considered a configuration flag allowing "aliases" to be rewritten sendmail-style rather than qmail ? (please :)
