The load on the other server was too high, and this is a simple way of separating things.

If that's the case, then the easiest thing to do would be set up a second system that only runs spamd. Then, on your primary mail server, invoke "spamc -d spamd.example.com". This will allow you to separate spamd from other mail processing without making the configuration of your mail servers overly complex.
