Hi everybody,

I ran into the problem described in this thread: <http://roundhound.com/courier-users/2005/07/msg00223.html>.

After much frustration I had a look at the traffic. I saw that courier tries to query ident. AFAIK ident is not running by default on any more or less recent FreeBSD.

After adding the "-noidentlookup" option in esmtpd, stopping and starting courier, I can now establish an SMTP connection from localhost.

I did not find any reference to this workaround so I'm posting it here. It might be useful to make "-noidentlookup" a default setting for the FreeBSD port? What advantage does the ident query have?

YES PLEASE TURN THAT OFF!

I'm CC'ing the ports maintainer and flaming the list because this is complete crap. I just spent an hour trying to debug this and digging through the list archives.

*EVEN IF THE IDENT FAILS*, it should go to the *LOGS* and and couriertcpd(8) should send an error back up the chain.

I'm hours away from a deadline and it's crap like this that's going to cause me to quit my job, move to the beach, sell t-shirts on the boardwalk.

Cheers! ~lava

Any enlightenment greatly appreciated...
