Sam,

The ownership or the permissions on Courier's etc directory or the etc/aliasdir directory are screwed up.

Check that etc/aliasdir is owned by Courier's install user, and is mode 755.

That was exactly it, ownership of aliasdir was screwed up. I changed that back to Courier's user and now everything works fine.
